Hen Party Ideas: Toilet Paper Dresses.

I thought for my next series of blog I would talk about different Hen/Kitchen tea party ideas.  I get the idea of writing about them because of a rather interesting competition that has recently taken place in America; a toilet paper wedding dress competition, from which the winner received $1000. Not a bad investment really (unless she used the really expensive stuff of course).

I remember having a rather smaller scale TP dress competition at my Kitchen tea and thought it was the most entertaining part of the afternoon. There were actually some pretty clever designs (although not quite as fancy as the top three competition winners).  Although I have to say that all we were allowed to use was toilet paper whereas it is taken more seriously in the competition and they use hot glue, different kinds of tape and embellishments such as flowers and feathers.

Below is a picture of the winning dress which required 1 week and 4 rolls of paper to make. With the help of glue and tape in place of thread it is a pretty good replica of a couture gown (although much more absorbent) .

The following 2 pictures are from second and third place. Both also very impressive and hard to believe they are made from toilet paper and glue.

I thought I would also include a picture of dresses that are much easier to create at a hen party.  These are much more within my abilities that is for sure!

(Victoria Beckham is third from the left, possibly enjoying herself but it really is very hard to tell) I promise you though that if you have this activity at your party, there will be plenty of laughter and some great photos to look back on!

This year turned out to be rich for Royal Weddings. The nuptial celebration of Kate Middleton, 29, and Prince William, 28, attracted, by some estimates, 2 billion viewers all around the world. This week another royal wedding, of Prince Albert II, 53 and Charlene Wittstock, 33, took place in Monaco. This celebration in Monaco attracted only a quarter of the number of viewers of the British Royal Wedding, but outshone it in many ways.

Both celebrations demonstrated what a wedding would be if a bride was not limited by a budget. William and Kate went for traditional choices when they planned their wedding and often used “something borrowed”. They ended up spending 32 million pounds or about 48 million Australian dollars. Albert and Charlene tried to make their wedding more glamorous and grand which cost them about 68 million dollars. This is a lot of money, considering there were only 1900 guests at the ceremony and 650 guests at the reception in London and 3500 guests in the church and 900 guests at the wedding in Monaco.

Let’s revisit some of the highlights of these weddings and may be you can compare them with your wedding plans and budgets.

Prince William made a very romantic and sentimental choice of an engagement ring. He presented to Kate a ring with an oval blue sapphire surrounded by a cluster of 14 diamonds, which used to belong to Princess Diana. Charlene’s engagement ring has a 3 carat pear-shaped centre diamond and is embellished with round diamond brilliants. The value of the centre stone in this ring estimated at over $100,000.

Kate and Charlene had something in common. They were both had to meet high expectations from the people of their countries. Everyone expected Kate to be a new Diana Spencer, and Charlene to replace the Hollywood princess Grace Kelly. Supporting these images, Kate’s hen night was just a quiet night in with friends. On the other hand Charlene’s bachelorette party attracted many celebrity guests and its theme was leather and lace.

At the wedding both brides looked gorgeous. Charlene wore an off-the-shoulder ivory satin Giorgio Armani Prive gown adorned with 40,000 Swarovski crystals, gold and pearl hand embroidery and a 5.5 meter train. Her raindrop shaped bouquet consisted of lily-of-the-valley and dendrobium orchids.   Kate was wearing a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen white dress with a 2.7 metre train and a beautiful tiara borrowed from Queen Elizabeth II. Her shield-shaped bouquet consisted of myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth.

For the wedding in Monaco BMW provided 200 cars. The Royal couple used a specially built convertible Lexus LS 600h Landaulet hybrid. Volvo supplied 85 cars for the transportation of foreign guests in London. The bride and her father arrived to the church in a Rolls Royce Phantom VI which was modified for the occasion with a transparent roof and rear. The newlyweds left the church in an old fashioned and very romantic way in an open carriage with horses. After the reception the couple left in a 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Volante MKII borrowed from Prince Charles.

And it is hard to forget the incredible wedding cakes. Kate and William had two wedding cakes. The main cake was an 8 tier high traditional fruit cake decorated with 900 sugar-paste flowers. The second cake was a special request of the prince. It was a chocolate biscuit cake which contained 1700 Rich Tea biscuits and 17 kilos of chocolate. Charlene and Albert had a massive 5 tier white chocolate cake decorated with South African Proteas flowers.

Both weddings were followed by awesome honeymoons. Katherine and William spent about $690,000 for a 10 days holiday on a private island in Seychelles. Albert and Charlene chose a presidential suite in a slightly less expensive hotel in South Africa. They room cost $7,400 per night.

If you are planning a wedding it might be useful and interesting for you to search the internet for recent celebrity weddings. You may get some interesting ideas for your wedding. In case your wedding budget is modest in comparison to the Royal couples I suggest you to use on-line planning and budgeting tools, such as ones found on www.weddingrewardsclub.com.au.

Reading about beautiful royal weddings made me ask myself what I would change at my wedding if I was as rich as a royalty. I realised that the only thing I would have changed was bringing to Perth all the friends and family members who could not fly here. Everything else we needed for our perfect wedding was already here in WA and cost us thousands times less than what William’s and Albert’s families paid.

Green Weddings 2

Decorations:

Decorating your wedding need not be limited because you want to keep it green (as in the ideal, not the colour, although I suppose a green green wedding could be fun). There are of course things to avoid, for example anything that would just be thrown in the bin or cause environmental problems. Use reusable ribbons instead of streamers and don’t use balloons. Balloons when released can drift to waterways and oceans and cause problems to marine life. Avoid confetti as much as possible because it litters the environment and isn’t recycled after use.  Great ideas for eco-friendly weddings include potted plants, locally grown flowers and natural candles.

I recently tested out some natural candles made by PR Glow and they are gorgeous. If you want scented ones there are loads to choose from and they smell great, while not being overpowering. They come in a range of styles and colours, so they are easy to match with your theme. The great thing also about buying candles from a small business is that usually you can have a candle specially created for your wedding.  You can buy small tea lights or something similar to match your theme to give out as favours, which means your favours will be eco-friendly too.  Check out PR Glow candles here: http://www.weddingrewardsclub.com.au/component/content/article/54-perth/57-prglowcandles

Clothing:

I’ve been looking into this and there are several ideas out there about how to get yourself dressed in an eco-friendly outfit.  It’s up to you how far you would want to go with this J.  First there is always the option of wearing a traditional gown handed down in your family, although I have a feeling this is usually limited to American movies (I could be wrong though) it is a nice idea if there is a lovely dress waiting to be worn.  Another idea is to buy a second hand dress from ebay, something blue , gumtree or an op-shop.

If you want a new dress that you find yourself to suit you then this is also allowed by the green ideal if you follow a few guidelines J. Try to find a gown that is made locally, or get it made new. Find out where the material is sourced from; is it from a sustainable resource? Where is it made? Is it fair trade? Finally, try to find material that is natural and organic rather than manmade.

I hope this very basic guide is of use to you and that you take it in the way that it is meant. This is a purely informative blog, not instructions about what you should or shouldn’t do.  This is your big day and it is important that you have what you want, not what others may think you should have. Enjoy your day and have fun, whether your wedding day is totally green, has a slightly green tinge or is not green at all.

Green Weddings Part 1

While I was researching green weddings I was amazed at how much information there is out there and how many services there are to help you to create a truly eco-friendly wedding.

I also find it amazing that my own wedding was less than 3 years ago and it wasn’t even a consideration then. (This was quite lucky since I had family travelling over from the UK and my husband had family flying over from Russia. Not your greenest guest list that’s for sure).

Anyway, even though there is so much info you can check out yourself, I thought it would be handy to have a summary of sorts here. Then you can decide what is important to you.  Even though I am summarising there is still so much info that I would bore you silly if I put it all down at once, so I will tell you about stationary and flowers today and decorations and clothing next time.

Starting with stationary:

The options begin at the more obvious things like recycled card to less obvious things like E-vites.  You can find suppliers who offer 100% recycled card and vegetable ink, there are also those who offset their carbon footprint in some way, creating a purely green service. With this option there is still the not so green postal service which would be required to deliver all of your invitations and possibly your RSVP cards.

The other green option is to go for E-vites which remove the need for any paper, inks or post, these services usually provide an RSVP service too.

Flowers:

The easiest way to be eco-friendly when choosing your flowers is to order local flowers that grow naturally during the season you need them.  This saves a huge amount of CO2 which would otherwise have been used to create hot-house flowers and to transport them.

Other options are to use potted flowers so they keep growing after they have been used, it is also a nice idea so you can plant them in your garden afterwards. This could be a messy idea though.  :)

If you have a green thumb and find gardening relaxing you could grow your own flowers. (But wear gloves otherwise your nails will never thank you).

The idea of a green wedding is a good and very socially responsible one, but I would also advise that you have what you want for your wedding day; after all it is a day that is a one-off.  Even in these eco conscious times I would still want my family at my wedding even though all of those flights aren’t good for the environment. My wedding wouldn’t have been as special without them all. So shop for green if that is what you want, but don’t limit yourself or your special day.

If you have a wedding business in WA that offers Eco wedding goods or services please feel free to leave your website link in the comments.

Thank you,

Loren :0)
